Cinephiles went wild yesterday (Sept. 27) over the release of the debut trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson's next movie, Licorice Pizza. Several recognizable actors were in frame: Bradley Cooper, Tom Waits, Sean Penn, Benny Safdie, and even Phillip Seymour Hoffman's son, Cooper Hoffman.
But one face many weren't expecting to see was Alana Haim of the HAIM sisters. Alana isn't just acting in the film - she's starring in it.
Alana Haim stars as Alana Kane and Cooper Hoffman co-stars as Gary Valentine in the new movie. Licorice Pizza is about “growing up, running around and falling in love in the San Fernando Valley, 1973,” according to its official synopsis. The movie will get a limited release on November 26, with a nationwide release scheduled for December 25.

The flashy trailer - soundtracked to David Bowie's "Life on Mars?" - shows Alana sprinting through various scenic backgrounds, shoving a water hose in a kid's face, and even following Cooper Hoffman as his character gets arrested by police. "Do you think it's weird I hang out with Gary and his friends all the time? I think it's weird that I hang out with Gary and his 15-year-old friends all the time," she says to a gal pal in the trailer.
This is not the first time Paul Thomas Anderson has directed a HAIM sister. PTA has helmed many music videos for HAIM (including the visuals for “Night So Long,” “Little of Your Love,” “Right Now,” “Now I'm In It,” and “Summer Girl”), and also shot the iconic cover image for the trio’s Grammy-nominated Women in Music Pt. III.
In other HAIM news, the trio recently shared the song "Cherry Flavored Stomach Ache," created for the soundtrack to Netflix's Last Letter From Your Lover. They've also rescheduled their U.K. tour to summer of next year and were recently added to the Boston Calling Music Festival lineup - leading many to wonder if there will be an international HAIM tour come spring 2022.
