Featured Spotlight Station: The Other Side

Live365's "Featured Spotlight Station" this week is The Other Side! We spoke with George Peck about their setup, what listeners can expect to hear, and the station's favorite songs. Check out the interview below!

What brought you to Live365?

After spending a few days looking at all the SoundExchange and PROs' sites, requirements, and minimum fees, I decided to look at Live365. I liked what I saw!

What's your studio like?

Having been in the traditional radio business on and off since 9th grade, I've always wanted my own "real" studio. And I actually made it happen well before the COVID-19 mad dash for home studios. There's all kinds of real radio station stuff in it, like a Logitek console, Neumann and Sennheiser mics, Genelec monitors, a 27" iMac, and a Comrex codec for real-time connection to radio stations! Check out what it looks like here!

What can listeners expect when they tune in to your station?

It might be borrowed from a common radio station slogan, but listeners can truly "expect the unexpected." This IS NOT a mainstream station. Any given hour will mix the likes of hip hop, alternative rock, a classic Miles Davis track, something chill, a Miley Cyrus/Stevie Nicks collaboration, Steve Martin (no, not King Tut), and maybe Glen Campbell's "By The Time I Get To Phoenix." But, it's not a mismatched hodgepodge. I work really hard to make it flow nicely from genre to genre and mood to mood. The station features about 75% new music, so there's always something you haven't heard before. I really care about good audio too, and you notice that when you listen.

What has been your favorite moment as a DJ/Station Manager so far?

Admittedly, there's a pretty low bar for a new station manager/DJ, but I did a very eclectic Christmas program for 36 hours and it got great feedback...that's it so far!

What is the best concert you've ever attended, and why?

I do remember the Mandolin Orange show at this beautiful new stand-up venue in Fort Collins, CO. This was an intimate evening with 900 of my closest friends. And, you could hear a pin drop.

What artist (dead or alive) would you love to see live, but haven't had the chance to see?

Asking someone who's passionate about music to pick a single artist for anything is tough... I don't have a single favorite food either. But, I'd love to see Loreena McKennitt. Her Nights from the Alhambra CD/DVD just had me well up yet again when I listened to it. My best bootleg is an "I hope it still plays" DAT of her whole UCLA show in the early 80s. Besides, who can argue with a backing band that includes, among others, a qanun, hurdy-gurdy, harp, and stratocaster.

We asked for some of the station's favorite songs. Here's what they had to say!

These are all rotating on The Other Side:

  • Twinkles - Chase
Being a trumpet player in school in the 70s, I developed a mad passion for Bill Chase's music. This is probably the most romantic song I've ever heard.

  • Last Night of the World - Bruce Cockburn
This is probably the second most romantic song I've ever heard. It accurately depicts how I'd spend the last night with my wife Denise and is a little more "feel good" than Modern English's "I Melt with You."

  • Boys in the Better Land - Fontaines D.C.
I've generally leaned "meh" on punk. In my 18 years living in LA in the 80s, I preferred KLOS and KIIS over KROQ. But, every time I hear this song, I start hopping around the room and moving my head up and down (provided it's not a client's office, but I will if they will).

  • Hey Now - London Grammar
Hannah Reid's voice. What else is there to say?

  • Emmylou - First Aid Kit
Anyone who can make Emmylou Harris cry is good in my book.
