Besides musical numbers, beautiful 17th-century production design, and Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage, the new movie Cyrano has something else to look forward to: an end-credits song from The National.
Cyrano is scored by band members Aaron and Bryce Dessner, but for the last song of the film, the two composers got the whole band together. The song is titled "Somebody Desperate" and it's a beautiful piano ballad written by the twin brothers and The National frontman Matt Berninger.
The film, directed by Joe Wright, is an adaptation of the 2018 stage musical written by Peter Dinklage’s wife, Erica Schmidt. Following a limited run in festivals, the movie is set to be released in theaters on December 31. Cyrano's full soundtrack will be shared on December 10.
In a recent interview with NME, the Dessners discussed how the tracks on the Cyrano soundtrack are "National songs in a way, and have an interior, intimate feeling." The end-credits song, the band’s first new tune since 2019’s acclaimed "I Am Easy To Find," is intertwined with the plot of the film, but ultimately has common lyrical ground with The National.
“I was writing a lot from my own perspective and bringing my own insecurities and my own feelings to the story,” Berninger told NME. “It’s easy to channel what these characters are going through, because we all have these deep insecurities when it comes to our hearts, and I’ve written about this stuff forever.”
Last week, Dinklage joined the Dessners to perform “Your Name” from the film's score on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. The brothers recently picked up 2022 Grammy nominations for Album of the Year for their work on Taylor Swift’s evermore.
