Alicia Keys Musical ‘Hell’s Kitchen‘ Being Developed At New York’s Public Theater

An upcoming musical featuring the music and lyrics of Alicia Keys – and allegedly based on the R&B singer's younger years – is currently in development at New York’s Off Broadway Public Theater.

Titled Hell’s Kitchen after the Manhattan neighborhood where Keys was raised, the production has director Michael Greif (Rent, Dear Evan Hansen), writer Kristoffer Diaz (the Public’s 2019 stage adaptation of Disney’s Hercules), and choreographer Camille A. Brown (for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf, Choir Boy) attached. The news comes after an Actors’ Equity audition call sheet was posted this week, which Broadway World was quick to report about today (February 7).

Casting has not been announced, though most if not all of the lead roles have been filled. Those roles inclue the character Ali, “a strong, stubborn girl with a rebellious streak” apparently based on Keys, as well as Jersey, “Ali’s mother, raising her as a single mom.” There's also Davis: Ali’s father. A synopsis describes Hell’s Kitchen as a “new musical that tells the story of Ali, a young girl growing up in NYC’s Hell’s Kitchen in the 1990s.”

Although the Equity info doesn’t list a production date, “development dates” are listed as three weeks this year falling within a May 24 and June 18 window. The Public has not provided any additional information on the project, with a rep saying the company does not comment on projects in development.

In other Alicia Keys news, the artist released her latest two-version album KEYS last year. Her 2001 album Songs in A Minor was added to the National Recording Registry back in April.
