Harry Styles has released the first single from his highly-anticipated third studio album, Harry's House. The track, called "As It Was," also arrives with a visually stunning new music video directed by Ukrainian filmmaker Tanu Muino.
“Directing a Harry Styles video was a bucket list dream come true for me as he’s my favorite performer,” Muino said of the “As It Was” visual in a press release.
She added: “Shooting him was bittersweet as it was one of the happiest days of my life, but on the second day of the shoot, my country Ukraine was invaded so you can imagine the insane emotions we had while shooting. Me and my team from Ukraine poured so much love into this video and you can see it on screen. It will be a music video I will never forget and now I can happily retire.”
The music video for "As It Was" shows Styles in bright red attire, riding on a rotating stage with a lover, meeting with her at a pool, and reaching to her across a mural-adorned room. NME suggests the song could possibly be about Styles' relationship with actress/director Olivia Wilde. The lyrics, “Leave America – two kids follow her / I don’t wanna talk about who’s doing it first,” reference the gossip surrounding the initial news of their relationship.
Containing 13 tracks in total, Harry’s House was recorded in multiple locations across the United Kingdom, Los Angeles, and Tokyo between 2020 and 2021. Styles wrote the record alongside frequent collaborators Kid Harpoon, Tyler Johnson, and Mitch Rowland. It will be the follow-up to Styles’ 2019 album Fine Line.
The title Harry's House could be a reference to Joni Mitchell’s song “Harry’s House / Centerpiece” from her 1975 album The Hissing of Summer Lawns. Styles is a long self-proclaimed fan of the singer/songwriter, covering her hit “Big Yellow Taxi” in 2020 and later during his NPR Tiny Desk Concert. Following the announcement of Styles’ next album, Mitchell’s official Twitter account responded with approval.
