Dr. Dre is releasing new music through the latest Grand Theft Auto Online story. Not only is the online game a way for Dre to get new work out into the world: the rapper is actually a part of the game's plotline.
On Wednesday (Dec. 8), Rockstar Games announced Dr. Dre and his music would be a main element of the brand new Grand Theft Auto playable online story The Contract. Players control fan-favorite character Franklin Clinton who works at his “celebrity solutions agency.” Franklin links up with another fan fave, Lamar Davis, as they work on a contract for their high-profile client, Dr. Dre.
“Lost in the shuffle on his way to Cayo Perico last year, it turns out Dr. Dre’s phone isn’t just missing — it’s in the wrong hands. Not only that, but the phone also contains the hottest property in the city: new, unreleased music from Dr. Dre himself,” a description of the game’s storyline reads in a statement.
It continues: "Get ready for a wild and hilarious ride through Los Santos, from the mean streets of Franklin’s old neighborhood to the hottest parties in the city, from debaucherous mansions to the offices of the FIB and everywhere in between as you join Franklin, expert hacker Imani, Chop the Dog, and crew to secure Dr. Dre’s precious tracks and return them to their rightful owner."
Out December 15, the story will feature “a ton of new and unreleased exclusive tracks from Dr. Dre and a heavy-hitting lineup of artists” as well as “new weapons, vehicles, and much more.” A new radio station will also be added to the game with “some very special guest hosts.” Additionally, Anderson .Paak makes an appearance in the game's trailer.
Rapper Snoop Dogg was the first person to tease his longtime pal’s musical return in October during an interview with Rolling Stone Music Now podcast. “I do know he’s in the studio. I do know he’s making great f–king music,” Snoop said during the chat. “And some of his music is connected to the GTA game that’s coming out. So I think that that will be the way that his music will be released, through the GTA video game.”
Along with Snoop, Dr. Dre is slated to headline the 2022 Super Bowl Halftime Show with Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and Kendrick Lamar. Dre's stint in GTA is his first announcement of new music since the release of his 2015 compilation album Compton.
Rockstar is set to bring GTA Online, through both a remastered version of V and a standalone release, to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles next year. The game first released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 all the way back in September 2013.
