Taylor Swift to Receive Honorary Doctorate from NYU

Taylor Swift is feeling '22...or should we say Doctor Taylor Swift.

Taylor Swift will be receiving a Doctorate of Fine Arts, honoris causa, from New York University alongside the graduating class of 2022. Not only will Swift receive a diploma herself, she'll also address students and guests at the school’s commencement ceremony on May 18 at Yankee Stadium.

Given this will be NYU’s first commencement since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the day will honor the 2020, 2021, and 2022 classes. In the morning, there will be a “traditional” ceremony for the current graduating class. Then, in the evening, there will be a “double-header” commencement for the classes of 2020 and 2021.

Swift will be speaking during the morning ceremony for the class of 2022. Disability rights activist Judith Heumann will then address the graduates at the evening ceremony. Heumann was featured in the Oscar-nominated documentary Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution, and is the author of the 2020 book Being Heumann: An Unrepentant Memoir of a Disability Rights Activist.

This isn't the first time Taylor Swift has been associated with NYU. The university's Clive Davis Institute recently completed its first-ever class on Swift's work. It was taught by Rolling Stone staff writer Brittany Spanos. Swift played no direct role in that particular curriculum.

Additionally, her longtime collaborator Jack Antonoff was named an artist-in-residence at Clive Davis for the 2021-2022 school year. The residency has included masterclasses and workshops with NYU students on music-making and production.

As for more recent Taylor Swift news, the singer/songwriter recently previewed a new Aaron Dessner–produced track called “Carolina” in the trailer for Where the Crawdads Sing, a film based on Delia Owens’ 2018 novel of the same name. In February, she was featured on a new version of Ed Sheeran's “The Joker And The Queen.”
