After teasing a new album for quite some time, The Weeknd has announced he will release his After Hours follow-up Dawn FM this week.
Dawn FM is set to be dropped this Friday, January 7. Tyler, the Creator, Lil Wayne, Quincy Jones, frequent collaborator Oneohtrix Point Never, and mysteriously, the actor Jim Carrey will make appearances on the record. While Carrey's role on the album is unclear, the Weeknd recently noted in a GQ interview the two are "telescope bros."
The Weeknd teased the album release last week, around New Year's. In an Iphone message he posted onto Instagram, the Weeknd wrote, “Music can heal and that feels more important than another album rollout. Let’s just drop the whole thing and enjoy it with the people.”
Last August, the Weeknd shared his first track since 2020’s After Hours, “Take My Breath.” It was released as part of a Tokyo Olympics trailer. Additionally, the song’s strobe-heavy music video was pulled from Imax theaters shortly before its release over concerns that it could trigger epileptic seizures.
The Weeknd has stayed busy with a number of collaborations since last summer. He joined FKA Twigs for “Tears in the Club,” linked up with Rosalía on “La Fama,” worked with Post Malone on “One Right Now,” and remixed “Save Your Tears” with Ariana Grande. He also appeared on the posthumous Aaliyah song “Poison.”
This summer, the Weeknd will finally embark on his After Hours tour, which has been delayed several times due to the COVID-19 pandemic and venue changes.
Outside of music, The Weeknd is still working on his HBO show The Idol. Produced with the help of Euphoria's Sam Levinson, it stars Lily-Rose Depp, Troye Sivan, TV on the Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe, and The Weeknd himself.
