After months of anticipation, Rihanna’s performance at the 2023 Super Bowl Halftime Show finally took place at Arizona’s State Farm Stadium yesterday (February 12). In her first public performance in five years, the Barbadian pop star sang while perched on a translucent platform, boogied alongside a mob of white hoodie-clad backup dancers, and even revealed she's pregnant with her second child.
Rihanna performed a medley of her greatest hits, opening the show with “B---- Better Have My Money” while atop the centermost platform. She followed with upbeat songs such as “Where Have You Been,” “Only Girl (In the World),” “We Found Love,” “Rude Boy,” “Work,” “Wild Thoughts,” “Pour It Up,” “Umbrella,” “Diamonds,” and more.
Rihanna wore a red jumpsuit during the show, as well as a high-shine crimson bustier. The silhouette of her outfit caused online speculation that she is pregnant again. Her representative later confirmed that the rumors are true: it was a baby bump, indeed.
Throughout the show, Rihanna's backup dancers commenced the performance on their own floating stages, then flocked around RiRi with synchronized choreography. The seven clear platforms changed formation several times, configuring into a "V" shape, a diagonal line, and more. The performance ended with Rihanna back on her own platform, ascending into the sky as she belted out "Diamonds."
Rihanna returned to music last year with “Lift Me Up” and “Born Again,” which were released for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The singles marked her first new music since the tracks released during the ANTI days in 2016. “Lift Me Up” picked up nominations for Best Original Song at the Academy Awards and the Golden Globes.
Since ANTI, Rihanna has been busy with her Fenty fashion line, as well as various other projects. In 2019, she appeared in Childish Gambino’s film Guava Island and published a 504-page “visual autobiography.” She has also featured in Ocean’s 8 (2018), Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017), Bates Motel (2017), and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (2016). She gave birth to her first child with A$AP Rocky last May.
