BBC Announces New Amy Winehouse Documentary '10 Years On'

The BBC will air a new documentary, Amy Winehouse: 10 Years On, to commemorate a decade since the singer's untimely passing.

The film, commissioned by BBC Two and BBC Music, will be told from the perspective of Winehouse's mother, Janis. The documentary will look back on Amy's personal life, her musical legacy, and her influence on the next generation of singer-songwriters.

“I don’t feel the world knew the true Amy, the one that I brought up, and I’m looking forward to the opportunity to offer an understanding of her roots and a deeper insight into the real Amy,” Janis said in a release, which noted that Janis’s viewpoint of Winehouse “often differs from the narrative we have been told before.”

The documentary will also look into Janis's multiple sclerosis diagnosis in 2003, and how the disease could someday limit her ability to share memories of Amy. Janis previously reflected on her daughter's life in the 2014 memoir Loving Amy: A Mother's Story.

Also featured in 10 Years On are close members of Amy's inner circle, family home movies, and clips of her performances from the BBC archives before the singer's death in July 2011.

In 2015, director Asif Kapadia won the Oscar for Best Documentary for his film Amy. However, Winehouse's family distanced themselves from that documentary, calling it “a missed opportunity to celebrate her life and talent and that it is both misleading and contains some basic untruths.” Winehouse's father, Mitch, also criticized the way he was depicted in Kapadia's film.

Besides 10 Years On, a new Amy Winehouse biopic is in the works. Kinky Boots writer Geoff Deane is slated to write the screenplay. As of 2021, the film has yet to go into production.
