To honor what would have been Ray Charles' 90th birthday, the musician's former label Tangerine Records will release a new limited edition box set containing over 90 remastered works and unreleased recordings.
The box set, called True Genius, will be released on September 10. It will contain six CDs, as well as a bonus CD which collects Charles' unreleased recordings. The tracks were recorded in Stockholm in 1972 and include his hits “What I Say,” “I Can’t Stop Loving You,” and “I’ve Got a Woman.”
There will also be a digital release of the box set. Some of Charles' hits will finally be available on streaming platforms after more than a decade off the web. “Hit the Road Jack,” "I'm a Fool to Care," "No One, and "I Don't Need No Doctor" are already available to stream as a teaser for the box set, while songs like “Crying Time,” “Busted," “America the Beautiful," "A Song for You,” and “Unchain My Heart” are among Charles’ classics that will eventually appear.
Valeri Ervin, President of the Ray Charles Foundation, said in a statement:
“We’re extremely proud to present this collection, which maps the breadth and depth of Ray Charles’ music, presented in chronological order so the listener can join Ray on his journey through the most expansive and creative period of his legendary career."
In addition to the music in the box set, the limited edition treasure will also house a coffee table-style book featuring rare photos with liner notes from Ervin and writer and music journalist A. Scott Galloway. It also includes a special message from Quincy Jones.
