To celebrate New York City's grand reopening following the COVID-19 pandemic, a mega-concert in Central Park will be held for citygoers this August. Bruce Springsteen, Jennifer Hudson, and Paul Simon have been tapped as headliners for the celebration.
At a press conference Thursday (July 1), Mayor Bill de Blasio revealed the three headliners and promised news of more artists would come soon.
"Three amazing artists have stepped forward and said they want to be part of the comeback of New York City,” he said. “They want to help us do this. And we're just really appreciative to all three of them.”
A contributing factor to Springsteen's involvement is his Broadway show, Springsteen on Broadway, which has made a successful return to the St. James Theater. “He is beloved in New York City in an extraordinary way, even though he happens to come from Jersey," the Mayor said. "No one's perfect. He is amazing.”
The “Homecoming” concert is set to take place in August on Central Park's Great Lawn, and will be part of a larger "Homecoming Week" Bill de Blasio is planning. Veteran music producer and executive Clive Davis has been tapped to produce the mega-concert, which is expected to be three hours long, feature eight "iconic" artists, have enough room for 60,000 attendees, and be a televised event.
More details about the concert are to be released in the coming weeks. "In August, get ready for an unforgettable week, a once-in-a-lifetime concert and a moment that really says New York City’s back," Mayor de Blasio said.
