R&B musician Steve Lacy has announced a new album. It's called Gemini Rights and will be out this summer via RCA Records.
According to a new interview with Lacy in Highsnobiety, the artist has felt like he's "always" been working on the forthcoming 10-track record, "But I consciously started saying I was making an album about a year and a half ago," he revealed. "I think I had to get over the fact that it was my first time working in a proper studio. I love The [East] Village. I found my room there, and it felt like home. That’s my happy place, man. That’s all I want to do."
To go along with the news, the "Dark Red" singer also released a new song called "Mercury." It's a brilliant blend of Brazilian bossa nova, funk, and contemporary pop and R&B. Lacy wrote, produced, and recorded the track all by himself.
The song also comes with a brand new music video that sees Lacy walking, singing, and dancing around a caged space inside a warehouse. It was directed by Rubberband and produced by SMUGGLER & LFR Productions.
Although Lacy's been releasing music for years, he finally dropped his debut studio album, Apollo XXI, in May 2019. "Mercury" is his first new single since that year. Following 2019, he's collaborated on tracks with Thundercat (“Black Qualls”), Love Regenerator (“Live Without Your Love”), and Ravyn Lenae (“Skin Tight”). He also shared a 2020 compilation album called The Lo-Fis.
