Rock band Spoon announced the release date of their upcoming 10th album on Thursday (October 28). Titled Lucifer on the Sofa, it is the first album the group has recorded in their hometown of Austin in more than a decade, and will drop via Matador Records February 11, 2022.
The album is the follow-up to Spoon's last studio album, 2017's Hot Thoughts. The Texas group gave fans a taste of Lucifer on the Sofa by releasing the single "The Hardest Cut." It was co-produced by the band and Grammy-winner Mark Rankin (Adele, Iggy Pop). The Halloween-appropriate music video features the band playing at a wild house party with a sub-story about a knife-wielding killer preparing to off his latest victim.
“It’s the sound of classic rock as written by a guy who never did get Eric Clapton," singer/guitarist Britt Daniel admitted in a statement. In describing the hard-charging sound of "Hardest Cut," co-written by Daniel and keyboardist Alex Fischel, the singer said, "I spent a lot of 2018 and 2019 listening to ZZ Top."
Back in September 2020, Daniel told Rolling Stone the album was nearly 80% complete prior to the COVID-19 pandemic halting recording. While waiting to work on the album again, Daniel reconnected with his love of classic rock and wrote some additional songs, including Lucifer on the Sofa's title track. This album is touted as being the "purest" rock record in the band's discography.
“The songs have a lot of different moods,” Daniel said back in 2020. “There’s one that’s got a Spanish flavor. There’s one that’s got an R&B flavor. There’s a straight-up epic rock song. When you’ve got all those choices, you can really shape the identity of a record by leaving something off.”
Besides Rankin, the album features contributions from frequent Flaming Lips collaborator Dave Fridmann and producer/engineer Justin Raisen (Angel Olsen, Charli XCX). Lasting until 6pm ET today (October 29), fans can hear "Hardest Cut" and more songs from the new album by purchasing a replay of the band's livestream concert Back to the Life // Live From Los Angeles here.
