Gorillaz Announce New Art Book by Z2 Comics
Gorillaz are the latest musical group to get the graphic novel treatment from Z2 Comics. In celebration of the 20th anniversary of Gorillaz’ debut album, the band’s co-creator Jamie Hewlett has teamed up with the comics brand to release The Gorillaz Art Book.
Due in April 2022, the coffee table book includes “new interpretations of 2D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle, and Russel Hobbs in one expansive volume.” Over 40 guests have contributed to the tome. Some of them include Robert Smith, Jack Black, Slaves’ Laurie Vincent, and Jamie Hewlett himself.
Other artists in the book include The Powerpuff Girls creator Craig McCracken, Clone High art director Tara Billinger, Adventure Time artist Erik Fountain, Buffy the Vampire Slayer cartoonist Marianna Ignazzi, Mad Max: Fury Road co-writer Brendan McCarthy, and music video director Ruffmercy.
“Gorillaz have always collaborated with music, but this is the first time we’ve done an art collaboration,” said Hewlett in a statement. “I’ve really enjoyed working with so many of my favorite artists and the result is this amazing book.”
The book will be case bound in Italy at 12.6 x 9.2 inches and set across 288 pages of luxury art paper. It’s now available to pre-order.
In other Gorillaz news, the band announced a 20th anniversary deluxe reissue of their self-titled debut album containing live tracks, remixes, and b-sides. Additionally, band member Damon Albarn has confirmed a feature-length Gorillaz film is in the works at Netflix.
