Country superstar Kacey Musgraves announced yesterday (August 23) that she will release her fifth studio album, star-crossed, on Sept. 10 via Interscope/UMG Nashville. Ahead of the project, Musgraves has also dropped the title track, as well as a trailer for a companion feature film.
star-crossed will include 15 tracks that Musgraves recorded in Nashville earlier this year in just under three weeks. Her Golden Hour collaborators Ian Fitchuk and Daniel Tashian also worked on the new album. A press release for star-crossed says the upcoming album is “structured as a modern-day tragedy in three acts,” one that relates to “an extremely personal journey of heartache and healing.”
This is Musgraves' first project since her divorce from fellow country singer-songwriter Ruston Kelly. The couple wed in 2017 and announced they were separating in July 2020. In the title track, Musgraves addresses the divorce with the lyrics, “Signed the papers yesterday / You came and took your things away / I moved out of the home we made and gave you back your name.”
Following the recent trend of visual album experiences, Musgraves is also releasing a 50-minute film to accompany star-crossed. It was directed by Bardia Zeinali, who has done music videos for the likes of Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, and Troye Sivan. The movie will stream exclusively via Paramount+ beginning Sept. 10.
In the press release, Zeinali said of the film, "We wanted it to feel cinematic and epic without compromising the heart and the emotion - to feel fantastical and heightened and tell her story through the lens of art and fashion."
The movie was filmed in Los Angeles and features Eugene Levy (Schitt's Creek, American Pie), Victoria Pedretti (The Haunting, You, Once Upon a Time...In Hollywood), rapper Princess Nokia, Symone (winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race), and comedian Megan Stalter.
star-crossed is the long-awaited follow-up to Musgraves 2018 Platinum album Golden Hour. Although her fourth album, Golden Hour catapulted Musgraves into superstardom, as she received widespread critical acclaim and won in all four of her nominated categories at the 61st Grammy Awards. Since then, Musgraves has released her own Christmas special and album, and more recently, shared an Earth Day rendition of the Golder Hour track "Oh, What a World."
