Iconic rock band Queen have dropped a rare unreleased song with Freddie Mercury vocals. Titled “Face It Alone,” the track was recorded during sessions for 1989’s The Miracle – which is being reissued on November 18. It was the penultimate Queen album to be recorded in Mercury's lifetime, and the new song features singing from the late legend.
The song had been forgotten by the band and was believed lost, according to the band’s interview with BBC Radio 2, where the track premiered. “It was kind of hiding in plain sight,” Brian May told Radio 2’s Zoe Ball. “We looked at it many times and thought, oh no, we can’t really rescue that. But in fact, we went in there again and our wonderful engineering team went, okay, we can do this and this. It’s like kind of stitching bits together. But it’s beautiful. It’s touching.”
In "Face It Alone," Mercury sings about how, when we face tragedy in life, ultimately we must learn to work through the pain ourselves in order to overcome it. "Your life is your own / You're in charge of yourself / Master of your home / In the end, in the end / You have to face it all alone" he croons on the chorus. The new song also comes with a lyric video that features old vignettes of the band.
The new reissue of The Miracle will include The Miracle Sessions: a collection of original takes, demos, studio chatter, and six previously unreleased tracks, including “Face It Alone.” The eight-disc box set will also feature songs from a The Miracle follow-up and more. You can pre-order it here.
