This summer, a new Chance the Rapper concert film called Magnificent Coloring World will premiere for fans - and it will only be available to watch on AMC Theatre screens.
A teaser for the film was issued Friday. Directed by Jake Schreier and produced by Chance’s House of Kicks and Park Pictures, the film celebrates five years since the release of Chance’s streaming-only mixtape Coloring Book and the Magnificent Coloring World Tour that followed.
In 2017, Chance the Rapper made history with Coloring Book by becoming the first independent artist to win a Grammy for a mixtape after successfully creating a petition to convince the Recording Academy to recognize streaming-only albums. With his AMC deal, Chance is making history again as the first individual recording artist to distribute a film through AMC Theatres.
"As the first individual music artist to distribute a concert film at AMC, Chance continues to break new ground in entertainment, and we are thrilled to bring this incredible event to the big screen at AMC communities around the country," said Nikkole Denson-Randolph, SVP of Content Strategy & Inclusive Programming at AMC Theatres. "Chance’s love of not only film, but the communal magic of the cinemas and the shared experience of seeing a film together makes this collaboration even more special."
Movie theaters are slowly starting to reopen across the country, but profits are still low. Although 2020's revenues were much worse, this week AMC Theatres reported a net loss of $567 million for Q1 of 2021. Chance's concert film is not only a gift for devoted fans, but a hopeful attempt to bring people back to movie theaters.
