Florence + The Machine frontwoman Florence Welch will be scoring a new musical based on F. Scott Fitzgerald's masterwork, The Great Gatsby.
Thomas Bartlett (aka Doveman) will also serve as composer. The latest update to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel will feature original music and lyrics by Welch and Bartlett. Rebecca Frecknall, Associate Director of London's Almeida Theatre, is set to direct the adaptation. It will be produced by Len Blavatnik and Amanda Ghost for Unigram in association with Robert Fox.
“This book has haunted me for a large part of my life. It contains some of my favourite lines in literature,” Welch said in a statement. “Musicals were my first love, and I feel a deep connection to Fitzgerald’s broken romanticism. It is an honour to have been offered the chance to recreate this book in song.”
No cast or production date announcements have been made yet. The show is expected to make an off-Broadway run before transferring to a theatre in Times Square. However, with the Broadway shutdown still mostly in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it's unclear which theatre that will be.
Why hasn't a Great Gatsby Broadway adaptation happened sooner? It's because The Great Gatsby finally entered the public domain on January 1, 2021. Prior to that date, unauthorized reproduction, distribution, display, and creation of derivative works were not allowed under copyright law. That means Florence Welch's musical is likely to be only one of several artistic interpretations coming soon.
