There have been plenty of memorable moments at this year's Coachella - from The Weeknd playing Kanye West's "Hurricane" after the artist dropped out to Finneas doing a performance of the Turning Red song "Nobody Like U." But in terms of using the festival to preview new material, Doja Cat is winning the game so far.
During her true Coachella debut on Sunday night (April 17), Doja Cat performed a new "Hound Dog"-interpolating song called "Vegas." The rap track is for Baz Luhrmann's upcoming biopic Elvis, about the life story of the famous hip-swinging singer. The performance included powerhouse vocals from a Black female singer - undoubtedly a tribute to Big Mama Thornton, the Blues legend who released "Hound Dog" before Elvis Presley dropped his more recognizable version.
Doja Cat concluded her set with an unreleased track. While no details have been revealed about the energetic song's title or whether it will be included in an upcoming Doja project, it does feature lots of heavy metal production elements: like rough electric guitar bits, a spit-fire drum rhythm, and even a screamo solo during the bop's end.
Additionally, Doja was joined by Tyga and Rico Nasty for performances of “Juicy” and “Tia Tamera,” respectively. Doja Cat originally performed at Coachella in 2019 with Rico Nasty - where they also performed "Tia Tamera" - but Doja wasn't on the festival's bill at the time.
In other Doja Cat news, the artist recently won the 2022 Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Kiss Me More,” a collaboration with SZA. Doja Cat earned eight nominations in total this year, including Album of The Year, Song of The Year, and Record of the Year.
