With huge names like Blackpink, Rosalía, boygenius, Charli XCX, Frank Ocean, Bad Bunny, Jai Paul, and Kali Uchis, 2023 Coachella was a historic time this year. However, despite all the exciting moments, the famous festival is now in hot water with the city of Indio, California.
Coachella has been fined $117,000 for breaking curfew violations in Indio all three nights, representatives for the city report. The festival was supposed to wrap up by midnight Pacific on Sunday night, but Frank Ocean’s headlining set went over by roughly 25 minutes. (And was later cut short.) Additionally, Coachella also broke the 1:00 a.m. PT curfew on Friday and Saturday by 25 minutes and 22 minutes, respectively.
The fines are part of an agreement between the city of Indio and Coachella's organizer, Goldenvoice, that kicked off back in 2013. In that document, it outlines that going five minutes past curfew will result in a daily fine of $20,000. Every minute after that costs $1,000 per minute. The fines go towards Indio’s General Fund, which is used for operating costs, public works, and the police and fire departments.
Touching on Frank Ocean in particular, the reclusive Blonde singer's long-awaited headlining Sunday set began nearly an hour late. Disappointed fans shared their frustration on social media with some saying they left the festival early. According to Rolling Stone, Ocean's performance was adjusted at the last minute due to an ankle injury. It was the singer's first performance in six years.
When it came time to abruptly cut Ocean's set short, the singer had to apologize to the crowd. "Guys, I'm being told it's curfew so that's the end of the show," Ocean stated while a chorus of boos erupted from the crowd, according to XXL. "Thank you so much."
Despite the expensive mistakes of last weekend, Coachella still has a chance to turn things around. The second weekend of the festival will run from April 21-23. Ocean will give another performance on that final Sunday evening.
