Featured Spotlight Station: Blue Moon Atelier Radio
Live365's "Featured Spotlight Station" this week is Blue Moon Atelier Radio! We spoke with Mary Layton about their setup, what listeners can expect to hear, and the station's favorite songs. Check out the interview below!
What brought you to Live365?
I spent a couple of decades in terrestrial radio, and found that I missed it. The appeal of programming my own station was an obvious draw, of course. So, when Live365 partnered with the beloved Fantasy Faire in Second Life for the event's Fantasy Faire Radio, I discovered that even I could have a radio station!
What's your studio like?
Boringly basic (for now, at least). Just my laptop, a headset that came with Dragon Dictation software, Audacity, and when I do live broadcasting, I'll be using Mixxx.
What can listeners expect when they tune in to your station?
An eclectic mix of prog, rock, indie, alternative, some ambient, and a bit of 80s pop and rock. In the tradition of old-school AOR (album-oriented rock), there will be "deep cuts," and I hope listeners will discover new favourites.
What has been your favorite moment as a DJ/Station Manager so far?
The freedom to play what I like without anyone to say things like "No one's ever heard of them," "That's too prog-y for our station," "Prince, followed by Jethro Tull? It just doesn't work," or "This is a country station; you can't play Queen on a country station."
What is the best concert you've ever attended, and why?
I quite enjoyed Rush in Charlotte, NC on the Signals tour. To be fair, I was almost more excited about Marillion who were originally scheduled to open for them, though they had to back out. But, I went with a group of friends, and it was a lovely time, with great music.
What artist (dead or alive) would you love to see live, but haven't had the chance to see?
Frightened Rabbit. I only just discovered them last year, and we lost lead singer-songwriter Scott Hutchison in 2018.
We asked for some favorite songs. Here's what they had to say!
In no particular order (other than the order in which they came to mind):
- Things - Frightened Rabbit
- Childhood's End? - Marillion
- First Circle - Pat Metheny Group
- Blackbird - Tiger Moth Tales
- My Hero - Foo Fighters
- Close to the Edge - Yes
- The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway - Genesis
- Under Pressure - Queen & David Bowie
- I Can Hardly Speak - Bombay Bicycle Club
- Violet and Blue - Stevie Nicks
