The 2022 Grammy Awards happened last night - Sunday, April 3. It was hosted by South African comedian Trevor Noah, who hosted the previous ceremony in 2021. Additionally, the ceremony's new location at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas marked the first time the Recording Academy switched host cities for a single ceremony.
It was an exciting night full of deserving wins, as well as some surprises. Jon Batiste received the most Grammy noms (11) followed by Doja Cat, Justin Bieber, H.E.R., Billie Eilish, and Olivia Rodrigo. Jon Batiste also scored the most Grammys with five wins, and pulled an unexpected Album of the Year win for his R&B/Jazz album We Are. He beat out Kanye West, Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Lil Nas X, Doja Cat, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga, H.E.R., and Justin Bieber for the accolade.
“You know, I really, I believe this to my core—there is no best musician, best artist, best dancer, best actor,” he said during his acceptance speech. “The creative arts are subjective and they reach people at a point in their lives when they need it most. It’s like a song or an album is made, and it almost has a radar to find the person when they need it the most.”
Silk Sonic also had an amazing night. The duo - comprised of Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak - won Record of the Year and Song of the Year for "Leave the Door Open." The song also earned Best R&B Performance (a surprising tie with Jazmine Sullivan) and Best R&B Song awards during the ceremony.
For Record of the Year, Silk Sonic beat ABBA, Olivia Rodrigo, Justin Bieber, Doja Cat and SZA, Jon Batiste, Billie Eilish, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga, Brandi Carlile, and Lil Nas X. During Silk Sonic’s acceptance speech, Anderson .Paak joked about trying to stay humble while “sweeping” their categories and Mars casually smoked a cigarette onstage.
Finally, teen idol Olivia Rodrigo - who was nominated in six categories - got that Best New Artist award we all figured she'd win. (You go, Liv!) She also took home the Best Pop Vocal Album trophy for her debut Sour, beating out records from Justin Bieber, Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, and Doja Cat.
“When I was 9 years old I told my mom I was going to be an Olympic gymnast, even though I could barely do a cartwheel, and she thought I was joking,” Rodrigo said in her acceptance speech. “So the next week when I told her I was going to win a Grammy she was very supportive, even though I’m sure thought it was just a little kid pipe dream. But I want to thank my mom for being supportive of all of my dreams, no matter how crazy.”
Earlier in the night, Rodrigo also won for Best Pop Solo Performance for “Drivers License.” The hit song was also up for Record of the Year and Song of the Year, while Sour was among the records competing for Album of the Year.
As for other notable wins, Doja Cat and SZA got the Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance with their song "Kiss Me More," Jazmine Sullivan won Best R&B Album for Heaux Tales, Baby Keem and Kendrick Lamar secured Best Rap Performance for “Family Ties,” Chris Stapleton won a Grammy for Best Country Album, Tyler, the Creator's Call Me If You Get Lost won Best Rap Album, and Jack Antonoff received an award for Producer of the Year.
The ceremony also featured a stellar lineup of performances. Among the several artists who got to entertain the crowd were Billie Eilish, Brandi Carlile, BTS, Carrie Underwood, Chris Stapleton, Jon Batiste, John Legend, Lady Gaga, Lil Nas X with Jack Harlow, Nas, Olivia Rodrigo, and Silk Sonic.
