Last week, English singer-songwriter James Bay went public about his upcoming third studio album, Leap. Bay shared details about the project with NME, saying the project is "a cohesive album, born out of the least cohesive time."
Leap will be released on July 8 via EMI Records/Republic Records. Recorded before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, the 12-track album was created through a mix of in-person and remote sessions in Nashville and London. Producers and songwriters on the album include Finneas, Ian Fitchuk, Dave Cobb, Foy Vance, and Joel Little.
Ahead of the album, Bay has shared two singles: "Give Me The Reason" and the newly-released "One Life." The latter song is a tribute to Lucy Smith – Bay’s longtime girlfriend and the mother of his daughter Ada.
“I’d never written from this perspective before,” Bay told NME. “I’d never written from a place of such joy and positivity. Lucy and I first got together at 16 and have been together ever since. She’s supported me since day one. From open mic nights, right through to my biggest shows. It’s been one adventure after another, but now we’re on the biggest one of all. Raising our beautiful daughter Ada.”
Leap will be Bay's first full-length project since 2018’s Electric Light. Despite that record's more experimental sound, Bay has promised that Leap will be a return to his simple guitar roots.
“On my second album, I threw a bunch of synths at my music and electronic sounds, and I had a brilliant time pushing the boundaries in that respect,” Bay explained. “This time I’ve fallen back to the guitar and an even more stripped back type of sonic. I’m always going to push boundaries in the music I’m making. The boundaries I’ve pushed this time around have been with the lyrics. I’ve found a way to write from a place of vulnerability that I have not gone to or written from before.”
