It's been 50 years since Joni Mitchell released her seminal studio album Blue, and now, the Canadian singer-songwriter is thanking fans with a new EP and a special video message.
On Monday (June 21), Mitchell released the Blue 50 EP. It's a collection of previously unreleased demos and outtakes from the original album. The five-song EP includes demos of “A Case of You” and “California,” alternate versions of “River” and “Urge for Going,” and the rare song “Hunter (The Good Samaritan).”
All the songs from the new EP will be included in the upcoming Joni Mitchell Archives Vol. 2: The Reprise Years (1968-1971), which arrives in October. You can pre-order here.
On Tuesday, Blue unexpectedly ascended to No. 1 on iTunes’ Top Albums chart, outperforming H.E.R.'s Back of My Mind, Olivia Rodrigo’s debut record Sour, and Mitchell’s own Blue 50, which landed at No. 7.
As thanks for the positive response, Joni Mitchell posted a video message to social media on June 23 addressing fans.
“I’m so pleased with all of the positive attention that Blue is receiving these days,” Mitchell said in the clip. “You know, when it was first released it fell air to a lot of criticism. So, 50 years later, people finally get it, and that pleases me. Thank you.”
