U2’s Bono and the Edge have shared a new acoustic version of their 1983 song “Sunday Bloody Sunday.”
The performance arrives in remembrance of the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, when British soldiers shot 26 unarmed civilians during a protest march in the Bogside area of Derry, Northern Ireland. The massacre also became a defining moment of the Troubles: the three-decade conflict between nationalists (mainly self-identified as Irish or Roman Catholic) and unionists (mainly self-identified as British or Protestant).
In an unspecified location, Bono and the Edge pour their hearts out into the lyrics of the song, which is normally performed in a faster tempo with booming drums, electric guitars, and even a fiddle in the track's original recording. "Sunday Bloody Sunday," which was the album opener of War, was responsible for breaking the band in the U.S. thanks to the heavy rotation the music video received on MTV.
In other U2 news, the band released a new single back in November 2021 called "Your Song Saved My Life." It appeared on the Sing 2 soundtrack. Bono also voiced a character in the film.
