After directing the "All Too Well" short film and directing music videos for her latest album, Midnights, Taylor Swift will be directing her own feature film for Searchlight Pictures.
The feature film is based off a script Swift wrote herself. Searchlight presidents David Greenbaum and Matthew Greenfield said in a statement, “Taylor is a once in a generation artist and storyteller. It is a genuine joy and privilege to collaborate with her as she embarks on this exciting and new creative journey.” Searchlight Pictures is the company behind films such as Nomadland, Black Swan, and Slumdog Millionaire.
The title, plot, and casting of Taylor's film is not yet known. The short film she wrote and directed for "All Too Well" was submitted for the 2023 Oscars, and won the 2022 VMA for Best Direction. The latter award made Swift, who also won in 2020 for “The Man,” the first solo artist to receive the honor twice.
During a discussion at this year’s Toronto film festival, Swift expressed desire to move into movie-making. “I’d love to keep taking baby steps forward,” she said. “And I think that I’m at a place now where the next baby step is not a baby step. It would be committing to making a film. And I feel like I would just absolutely love for the right opportunity to arise because I just absolutely, absolutely adore telling stories this way.” Swift also stated she wanted to tell “human stories about human emotion” and could see herself going to a “more comedic, irreverent place.”
As an actor, Swift recently made a cameo in David O Russell’s Amsterdam and has also starred in Cats, Valentine’s Day, and The Giver. Next year will see Swift embark on her Eras Tour, her first all-stadium trek since 2018. Given the tour's Ticketmaster fiasco, it's projected to be the highest-grossing U.S. tour of all time.
