Janet Jackson shared the first teaser for her upcoming documentary JANET to social media Monday (September 6).
The one-minute trailer shows several archival video clips of Jackson - her 1986 song "Control" playing in the background. Fellow friends and celebrities such as Paula Abdul, Mariah Carey, Missy Elliot, and Tito Jackson make appearances. They all talk about their connection to Janet. "This is what a superstar look like," Elliot begins. “She’s an empowered woman,” says Carey. “She is a force to be reckoned with,” adds Abdul. “She will always be my baby sister” Tito remarks.
The fierce footage and music concludes on Janet's words: "This is my story told by me, not through someone else’s eyes. This is the truth - take it or leave it. Love it or hate it. This is me."
JANET is a two-night, four-hour documentary experience set to air on A&E and Lifetime in January 2022. Its release next year is meant to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Jackson's debut self-titled album. Over five years in the making, JANET includes exclusive archival footage, home videos and celebrity interviews.
The doc follows Jackson as her famous family experiences the loss of their father, Joseph, who passed away in 2018. The film also shows archival footage and detailed accounts of some of the star’s most challenging moments: including the passing of her brother, Michael Jackson, becoming a mother to her son, and the 2004 Super Bowl performance that nearly ruined her career.
JANET is executive produced by both Janet and Randy Jackson. Rick Murray executive produces for Workerbee and Brie Miranda Bryant serves as executive producer for A&E Networks. Ben Hirsch directs.
