As promised, Paramore have finally released their new song “This Is Why.” Alongside the comeback single, the band have officially announced that their next album, titled This Is Why, is due out February 10, 2023 via Atlantic.
Regarding the new song, Paramore’s Hayley Williams said in a statement: "'This Is Why' was the very last song we wrote for the album. To be honest, I was so tired of writing lyrics but [guitarist] Taylor [York] convinced [drummer] Zac [Farro] and I both that we should work on this last idea. What came out of it was the title track for the whole album. It summarizes the plethora of ridiculous emotions, the rollercoaster of being alive in 2022, having survived even just the last three or four years. You’d think after a global pandemic of f---ing biblical proportions and the impending doom of a dying planet, that humans would have found it deep within themselves to be kinder or more empathetic or something."
As for their sixth album, Paramore recorded it in Los Angeles with help from longtime collaborator Carlos de la Garza. Paramore have claimed that early influences – including the alt-rock band Bloc Party – shaped the sound of the 10-track record. "This Is Why" proves the band will be using that nostalgic, guitar-heavy indie rock sound for their latest project.
The music video for the new song premiered on YouTube today (September 28) and was preceded by a livestream from the band that was notably muted. The visual – directed by Turnstile’s Brendan Yates – was filmed in Malibu, California. In the video, the band chills in various scenic locations while a camera crew films them. In one startling bit, Hayley Williams draws all over her face with red lipstick.
As for other Paramore news, the band is planning a fall North American tour that kicks off October 2. Recently, they added a New York show date at the Beacon Theater (thus revealing what the mysterious "start spreading the news" slot on their online schedule meant). Tickets for shows that aren't already sold out can be found on Paramore's website.
