Paramore Release First Single of 2023, 'C'est Comme Ça'
There's less than a month to go before Paramore's upcoming studio album, This Is Why, is released. Today (January 12) the group released their third single from the record. The new song, titled “C’est Comme Ça,” follows the album's title track and “The News.”
“C’est Comme Ça” translates to "It's Like That" in French. Within the Talking Heads-esque instrumentation, frontwoman Hayley Williams delivers various ironic spoken word lyrics. For example, she says, "I'm off caffeine on doctor's orders / Said it was gonna help to level out my hormones / Lucky for me, I run on spite and sweet revenge / It's my dependence on the friction that really hinders my progression" in the song's second verse.
The caustic nature of the verses is turned on its head, though, with every repetition of its punchy chorus: “C’est comme ça, na na na na na na na.” Williams also wails on the song's bridge, almost screaming, "I know that regression is rarely rewarded / I still need a certain degree of disorder / I hate to admit getting better is boring/ But the high cost of chaos?/ Who can afford it?”
In a statement related to the song, Williams explained, “I’m trying to get un-addicted to a survival narrative. The idea of imminent doom is less catastrophic to me than not knowing anything about the future or my part in it. The guys and I are all in much more stable places in our lives than ever before. And somehow that is harder for me to adjust to.”
This Is Why is out February 10 (pre-order here). It’s Paramore’s first album since 2017’s After Laughter. The band did a small-but-successful North American tour during the fall of 2022. Soon, Paramore will be on the road again in support of their new LP.
