Bruce Springsteen has announced that he will be releasing his upcoming album on June 14 via Columbia Records. The album, Western Stars, is Springsteen’s 19th studio album and first new studio album in more than five years.
According to a press release, Western Stars consists of 13 tracks written by Springsteen that “encompass a sweeping range of American themes, of highways and desert spaces, of isolation and community and the permanence of home and hope.” The inspiration for the album primarily comes from the Southern California pop records of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s.
Springsteen has described the album as “a jewel box of a record” featuring "character-driven songs and sweeping, cinematic orchestral arrangements."
Springsteen and Ron Aniello, producer of Springsteen's last 2 albums, co-produced the album. Over 20 musicians played on the album, including Jon Brion, Patti Scialfa, founding E Street Band member David Sancious, Charlie Giordano, Soozie Tyrell, and more.
Western Stars marks Springsteen’s first studio album since 2014’s High Hopes. The first single off the new album, “Hello Sunshine,” will be released at midnight tonight alongside the music video for the track.
