Patti Smith has announced that she will be releasing her third memoir, which will recount the year 2016. Named Year of the Monkey, the book will be released on Sept. 24 via Knopf.
Smith spent the year 2016 writing after her run of New Year’s concerts at the Fillmore in San Francisco. “I began writing it on New Year’s Day, 2016 in cafes, trains and strange motels by the sea, with no particular design, until page by page it became a book,” Smith wrote on Instagram.
In 2010, Smith released her first memoir, Just Kids, which recounts Smith's early life and the beginning of her career, particularly her relationship with late artist Robert Mapplethorpe. Her second memoir, M Train, was released in 2015. It focuses on a later portion of her life, including the personal losses that she experienced between 1975 and 2015.
