Apple Acquires Shazam After European Union Approval
After several months of investigation into the competitive implications of Apple acquiring song-recognition app, Shazam, the European Union has approved the acquisition.
Regarding the investigation, EU antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager said "We must therefore carefully review transactions which lead to the acquisition of important sets of data, including potentially commercially sensitive ones, to ensure they do not restrict competition. After thoroughly analysing Shazam’s user and music data, we found that their acquisition by Apple would not reduce competition in the digital music streaming market."
Apple announced in 2017 that it was going to acquire Shazam. The EU was concerned that the acquisition would give Apple access to consumer data that would give them an unfair advantage in attracting customers in the music streaming market.
