Country star Maren Morris is releasing a follow-up to her pop-friendly 2019 album Girl. The new project is called Humble Quest and will feature 11 brand new tracks that promise to stand apart from her last record, leaning darker, more introverted, and introspective.
"It turns out the pandemic did humble me," Morris said in a social media post, after describing the emotions she went through during a year of major changes. Those changes included a new baby and, like all of us, isolation amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Shooting off my mouth one time too many humbled me, the death of a beloved friend and producer humbled me, motherhood and marriage humbled me," Morris wrote. "'Humble' began to feel more like a grounded state of understanding oneself; not so much by being relatable to or understood by all."
The album is produced by Greg Kurstin, who also helped in producing Girl. Earlier this week, Morris released the first single and video from the album, “Circles Around This Town.” It's an unflinching look at Morris' early career days in Nashville. Morris described the overall sound of the new record to Taste of Country, noting the organic nature of "Circles Around This Town" is indicative of the album as a whole.
“It’s a lot country-er on an instrumental level," Morris shared. "And rootsy-er than my last record which was very pop heavy. It’s a really hopeful record.”
Humble Quest is set for release on March 25 and will be Morris' third studio album since signing with Sony Music Nashville. The new record has a lot to live up to, since Girl won the CMA for Album of the Year, while Hero (2016) was nominated for several awards.
