Indie artist The Tallest Man on Earth has announced a new covers album. Titled Too Late for Edelweiss, the LP is a follow-up to his 2019 album I Love You. It’s A Fever Dream, and is due out this Friday, September 23, via Anti-.
Spanning 10 tracks, the album features covers of songs popularized by Bon Iver, Lucinda Williams, Yo La Tengo, The National, Hank Williams, and more. The album takes its name from “För sent för Edelweiss,” a song by the Swedish pop musician Håkan Hellström that’s also covered on the album. That cover was released back in July, when The Tallest Man on Earth first teased the project.
The Tallest Man on Earth – aka Swedish musician Kristian Matsson – recorded the album in Sweden and in North Carolina, between sessions for a new album of original songs. Matsson shared in a statement: "This past year, I’ve spent a lot of time touring but also writing and recording an album that I’m wildly proud of and will see the light of day eventually. But in the small hours in between trips and sessions, mostly in my house in Sweden and an Airbnb in North Carolina, I lo-fi recorded some covers here and there. Many times as a reset button for my own song writing, to cleanse the palate from my whirlpool mind while writing songs. A little document of songs I had on my mind during those nights."
Ahead of the release, Matsson has shared his rendition of Hank Williams’ “Lost Highway.” Williams’ rendition of the single was released on his 1949 album of the same name, and has since been covered by Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, and Townes Van Zandt, and more.
Following the release of his covers album, The Tallest Man on Earth will head out on tour, performing across Europe throughout Spring 2023.
